music        news/events        bio        contact        recordings The Bluenote 1993 flute piano cello duration 3'  first performance: Students of The Rivers School The Rivers School, Weston / April 2, 1993 SCORE PROGRAM NOTE Written at the request of my composer-colleague Marti Epstein for a student group she was coaching, this was my first introduction to the splendid work – especially in the are of new music – done by The Rivers School in Massachusetts. The piece is very slight and celebratrates the flattened third or 'bluenote'. I've found over the years that the contrast between a minor and a major third is pivotal in almost all of my music, and this piece comes clean about it.
