PROGRAM NOTE
Opening and closing with almost identical gritty, heavy rising scales and syncopations, this work is an extended ABA form. The first movement is a truncated foreshadowing of the third movement. This continuous swathe of turbulent music is broken by the second movement; a long, graceful arching descent framed by distant chiming and the skeleton of an ornamented waltz. the third movement itself contains a gentle chordal central section echoing the ABA shape of the second movement and of the whole work.
