PROGRAM NOTE
Sometimes when I'm working on a new piece I'll have a number computer files containing sketches and ideas. In order to find them easily I often name these files after the first thing that my fingers type on the keyboard, without giving it too much thought. As a composer I've always been happy to make use of serendipitous accidents and surprises, often these are useful messages from the subconscious. Well, that sounds very grand for an occasional piece such as Lemonsauce. The title was originally just the sort of placeholder I referred to above, but as I worked on the piece it seemed to fit the music more and more; sweet yet tart, sunny, tangy and not too solid. So I kept my provisional title, but why it first came to me—that I'm not so sure of!
