PROGRAM NOTE
I typically write music with fairly involved programmatic intentions along with forms that echo or
amplify them. However, I also enjoy music that simply unfolds a process or a ‘conceit’. Fabrication 4: Device is a component part of a larger 32-movement cycle for various ensembles ranging from solos and duos to works for orchestra. These Fabrications explore more mechanical approaches to generating music. Each has a subtitle; a synonym of ‘fabrication’ which says something about the piece itself.
Fabrication 4: Device is part of a subset of Fabrications entitled Blue Dots. For a while in 2008 and 2009 there was a rectangular grid of blue lights in one of the display windows of the MIT Museum. These would light up in different configurations, always the same and always changing. Blue Dots makes musical analogies to this display; the organization of the music is essentially binary (notes are either on or off) but each work takes a different approach to realizing its musical analogy.
