However, I also enjoy music that simply unfolds a process or a ‘conceit’. Fabrication 32: Manouevre is a component part of a larger 32-movement cycle for various ensembles ranging from solos and duos to works for orchestra. These Fabrications explore more mechanical approaches to generating music. Each has a subtitle; a synonym of ‘fabrication’ which says something about the piece itself. Fabrication 32: Manouevre is a companion to Fabrication 12: Grapevine in which John Conway’s The Game of Life is again applied to a set of ‘dots’ occuring in time as well as in space. The pitches are taken from the ‘blue dots’ cluster sequence used elsewhere here and each of the little automatic engines ends up locking into a pattern of repeated pitches. see also Fabrications
